Blemishes And Non Cystic Acne: My Journey

hormonal acneI have made a lot of progress on my skin since this picture was taken in 2011.When your face looks like this, your body is trying to send a message. It’s hurting and it needs help. I’ve found a lot of natural tools to tackle the problem of adult hormonal acne. In my first and second posts of this series, I explain that there are three different reasons for acne: bacteria on the skin, food intolerances and hormone imbalances.  Read about those more here.       Part 1       &   Part 2

This is part 3 of the series.

For me, this was a 3-way war. I didn’t just have one cause for my adult acne, I had three. Once I realized I needed to heal from the inside out, my journey began taking on momentum. In the beginning, it’s always hard to try to find something that will work because we expect a one-prong answer. Just like a three legged stool, I needed to support all three legs of my stool in order for it to work properly. The last leg on my stool was my hormones and figuring out natural and safe ways to support my body. I had gone to the Doctor and had only been offered synthetic substances. It didn’t make sense to me to begin adding fake, man made chemicals into my body when I was trying to be healthy from the inside out. It felt like that would be adding to the problem. It wasn’t until I found Young Living, that I was able to trust the products that I was putting into my body.

All of the products that I highlight on my journey have added essential oils. Progessence Plus is a natural way to support the body. It’s wild yam based and helps to balance the luteal phase of the woman’s cycle. (Day 14- end) It does not need to be cycled. Lack of progesterone can be a precursor to many problems related to the woman’s reproductive cycle and lack of hormones. I use this daily.

Joy is a wonderful blend for hormonal support with singles such as Geranium and Ylang Ylang.

Prenolone+ is a unique product in the fact that it delivers pregnenolone, DHEA and black cohosh to help maintain healthy estrogen levels. This supplement is meant to be cycled for 21 days. As we age, our bodies will naturally produce less hormones, but we can support the decrease like a well made pair of Spanx!

Lastly, this blend of oils will support the Thyroid. It’s so versatile, I give it to my pre-teen daughter for growth spurts and menstrual help. It amplifies metabolism and creates hormone balance with oils like spearmint, sage, myrtle, and nutmeg. It also smells WONDERFUL!

For more help on hormonal balance, please consult your Doctor. There are many tests that can reveal deficits and imbalances that can give you an overall picture of your health as a starting point of reference. I do not pretend to know everything, nor am I a physician. Only one of these products has been tested and approved by the FDA, while the others are still awaiting their trial. Please use your own discernment and start slowly when you are supporting the endocrine system.

2014 (without make-up)

2016 (mascara, no foundation)

Mother’s Day 2017 (light foundation)

Here’s the progress, from the beginning of my journey, until now. My face has dramatically improved, but so has my digestion, skin elasticity, energy, hair and nail strength and mental agility. When you heal your body from the inside out, there are so many benefits. I’d love to go on this journey with you. How To Beat A UTI… Naturally

Category : Essential Oils , Health

Last weekend my 7 year old was going to the bathroom, A LOT. I noticed he used the bathroom 4 times in 2 hours. When I asked him if his tummy hurt, he said no, but it’s hard to go pee! I knew exactly what the problem was right away and looked up bladder infection in my EODR (Essential Oil Desk Reference.)

The oils and supplements listed to treat a Urinary Tract Infection included:
Myrrh                                                   Endoflex
Spikenard                                            RC
Lemon                                                 Melrose
Melissa                                                Purification
Mountain Savory                                 Thieves
Thyme                                                 K & B  (Kidney & Bladder)
Rosemary                                            Immupro
Clove                                                   Alkalime
Tea Tree (Melaleuca A.)

I gave my son the K&B supplement twice a day, which I happened to have in my supplement storage from a past UTI that I had been healing from. It was exactly what I needed with ingredients like juniper, parsley, dandelion and royal jelly to work on the UTI from the inside out. I used most of the oils listed above topically on the abdomen as well as Juva Flex on his kidney area and Ninxia Red as a morning supplement.
On Monday morning we went to the Pediatrician, to check on the infection and possibly recieve the standard antibiotics. (I do still use them when necessary but this child happens to be allergic to penicillin.) The Dr. reported that the urine sample was clean and as long as the other symptoms were subsiding as the week progressed, “whatever” we were doing was working. No antibiotics needed!

Weight Loss in the New Year

weight loss systemWeight Loss in the New Year

The month of January undoubtedly brings New Year’s Resolutions which include getting healthier. Fad diets abound and gym memberships are started. It’s the time of motivation.

If you know me well, you know that my theory on weight loss can be summed up by the phrase, “eat fat to lose fat.” It’s a real food theory that essentially believes the body actually needs good fats, (avocados, olive oil, coconut oil, grass fed butter) to operate and maintain normal functions. If the body is deprived of real fats, then all kinds of systems are thrown out of whack and loosing weight becomes last on your body’s list of priorities as it’s trying to fix a multitude of other issues spurned on by the non-fat dieting.

When given the choice, I always choose whole fat foods. Your brain needs fat and your endocrine system (think hormones) need good sources of cholesterol to function. Hormones play an integral part in weight management for women as we age. Children especially need healthy fats for their developing brains. So when I talk about weight loss, I always have to give the caveat of, “keep eating, and choose healthy sources of fat.” Your body will thank you.

Young Living does off a weight management system called Slique. There is a meal replacement shake, tea, protein bars, gum, dietary fiber and essential oils all included in the Slique line. The fiber is for creating a healthy digestive system, which is a must when we discuss weight loss. Your gut needs to be eliminating frequently to absorb the nutrients you are feeding yourself. It also helps to eliminate cravings for sugar and salt when it’s all working properly.

The essential oils that are embedded into these products are what makes this product line different than the rest. healthy weight Loss

In the coming year, if you have any health related goals, I hope you will consider adding more healthy fats into the diet.

#mystory As I’ve tried making lasting changes to my diet over the years I’ve learned a few key components. First, real change comes slowly. Don’t pressure yourself into unrealistic expectations because guilt will follow. Pick one thing to focus on. The first thing I chose to do 6 years ago was eliminate soda. After months of resisting the temptation, I added another baby step.

Second, adding foods to your diet is easier than subtracting them. People make the mistake of getting rid of things first. In reality, your body is crying out for MORE nutrition! More vitamins, more minerals, more fats. Adding new foods alongside some of your “normal” ones will produce lasting change because as you nourish your body, you will crave the unhealthy foods less and less. Add in the vegetables and after that becomes normal, you will have more energy and more drive to eliminate unhealthy snacks.

Third, get enough sleep. This is critical to weight loss and making healthy changes in general. When we are tired, we crave the fast fixes like caffeine and sugar to help with energy. Lack of sleep will be your ultimate enemy when making lasting change.

Know this- in the month of January, I am transitioning and making changes alongside you. Don’t expect everything to go smoothly and give yourself grace. Change always leads to growth -so stretch and grow!

Thieves Oil

11951289_10153526332698232_5695957047608014533_nHow Do I Use My Oils?

My two boys give me ample opportunities to try them out. The week before school started, my youngest was wrestling with our 12 week old puppy. Sharp puppy teeth skimmed his ear and left a gash that needed to be glued together by our Pediatrician. His Pediatrician prescribed “preventative” antibiotics because dogs have germs in their mouths. I took the prescription and decided to fill it at the first sign of infection. I used my Thieves oil as “preventative” medicine to fight off doggy germs. Would be have gotten an infection? We will never know, but I saved his intestinal flora this time and his ear is 100% healed. No infection occurred. The scar is minimal and I am one happy mommy. Thieves oil works!

I’m always looking for great, self motivated mommies to join my Young Living team. I send out weekly emails to my team with helpful hints and recipes to use the oils. Email me for more information, I’d love to have you.

Penicillin Allergy

It had been a full holiday season and all of the Christmas gifts had been opened and played with. My sweet 3 year old son had come down with an ear infection and we went to the Pediatrician to get our routine prescription of penicillin. A few days later, he had full body hives and we discovered he had a penicillin allergy.

My trusted Pediatrician informed me that there are two types of allergies to antibiotics: mild or life threatening. She determined my son’s allergy was life threatening and immediately removed the bottle of antibiotics from the room. He was to never have another dose of penicillin or any of the other forms of penicillin again because it could trigger anaphylaxis shock.

This was serious, and I knew all to well how serious it truly was. Three years prior, my husband went into anaphylaxis shock as he entered his local Dr’s office.anaphylaxis shock We were both clueless that he was so close to death at this point that I was driving him to the clinic, not the emergency room. He was posting on Facebook.

I walked out of the Pediatrician’s office feeling panicky because I never wanted to relive another event like that. Up to this point in my motherhood, I had always relied on antibiotics to treat common childhood illnesses like ear infections. I knew there were other antibiotics on the market he could use, but they were stronger and scarier. They were unknown. None of the other mommies I knew had dealt with this and I was at a loss.

Fast forward one year to an essential oils class that my friend had invited me to. I was interested in holistic healing, I had been visiting a naturopath myself recently and wanted a more natural approach to illness and disease.

Up to that point, my son had not experienced another ear infection, or anything else that required antibiotics and I was grateful, but I felt like my luck would run out at some point.

As I was sitting in my first oils class and learning about all of the benefits of using essential oils, I knew that I had found my answer. The relief was palpable and I didn’t have to secretly sit and worry about when the next ear infection was going to hit. I had new tools in my tool belt.

The words penicillin allergy were no longer a threat in my mind.

This is the number one reason why I choose essential oils to treat my family’s sickness. It’s #mywhy; my motivation for teaching others and sharing them with friends. Even this week as I fill out the medical forms as school is starting, I still have to mark down “penicillin allergy” on my son’s forms, but it serves as a reminder of how far we’ve come.

If you’ve never tried using them for yourself, what are you afraid of?

Email me today  ddeirdre (at) yahoo (dot) com and we can find a class together for you to learn and ask questions in. You won’t regret it!

Yoga and Jesus: Just Breathe

A few years ago I had a counselor critique me. He said, “you don’t breathe.” I looked at him with curiosity and then realized I was in fact holding my breath. Maybe you do it too?

His recommendation? To breathe, and practice breathing deeply when I feel stress. And for at least 8 years now, I have been practicing this. Reminding myself to breathe, reminding my children and my best friend, “just breathe” I say. Try it, right now, nice and deep. Doesn’t it feel good? A cleansing breath.Just breathe, doulaThere’s this new adventure in my life right now called yoga. I’ve been a bit close minded about it in the past I’m afraid to admit, and now since trying it I’ve come to understand the benefits. I was close minded because it seemed so zen and associated with religions other than my own. But, I’ve come to realize…

1. We can be friends with Jesus and Yoga without compromise. My pastor said that sometimes as Christians we can be so afraid of Eastern religions and the traditions that we have completely dismissed meditation in Christianity. Abraham meditates in Genesis 24. In the book of Joshua, the LORD tells Joshua to meditate on the law day and night. And all throughout the Psalms we are instructed to meditate on God’s wonders, His promises, His statutes, and His works. This is an absolute Biblical habit. We should not be afraid of compromising our relationship with Jesus by meditation. In fact, it can strengthen it.

2. Yoga trains the mind and body to be still before the LORD. Now,  there are definitely challenging poses that require effort, but what I’ve experienced is a stillness of mind while doing yoga. I’m not going through my to do list. I’m not paying attention to my mobile device. I’m in my body, giving my full attention to my muscles and my breathing. I’ve learned to hold a pose, and still my mind and ignore the thoughts of “I can’t do this.” If I am intentional about prayer while practicing yoga, I can walk away feeling like I’ve actually spent time with Jesus during a session.

3. Yoga trains me to breathe. So, let’s just state the obvious. If you hold your breathe while exercising in general, you will pass out. During a stretching pose that is particularly difficult, if I breathe, I can maintain a deeper stretch than if I don’t. If I breathe, I can stretch further and longer than if I don’t. If I breathe, I can hold a pose longer because I’m focusing on the breath instead of the pain. This is what I often tell my doula clients during labor contractions. Focus on the breath instead of the pain.

yoga, doula

During a yoga session I wear Bergamot and Ylang Ylang essential oils to help with the mind/body connection. They don’t drug you into submission, they just encourage the natural processes that are happening in the body while exercising. You will often hear instructors remind the class to breathe. It’s training and it’s good for you. For stressful times, for pain filled times, just breathe.

Mineral Essence tastes like…

Why are Minerals important for the body?

According to two-time Nobel Peace Prize winner, Linus Pauling, PhD, “You can trace every sickness, disease, and every ailment to a mineral deficiency.”

WOW. Minerals are necessary for the body to preform basic metabolic functions. What are metabolic functions? The set of life-sustaining chemical transformations within the cells of our body. These enzyme-catalyzed reactions allow organisms to grow and reproduce, maintain their structures, and respond to their environments. Sounds important.

Without minerals, the vitamins that we get through food cannot be absorbed. Mineral Essence contains 60 trace minerals.

The essential oils that have been added to the mixture help our body absorb the minerals: lemon, peppermint and cinnamon.

A group of volunteers consumed trace minerals without essential oils and the result was diarrhea within 24 hours.

The same group, allowed a period of cleansing for several days, and then consumed Mineral Essence with essential oils added and there was no occurrence of diarrhea.

IMG_0461Just one more reason why Young Living’s supplements are superior. So, as always, I will give an honest review. Mineral Essence tastes like salt water plus cinnamon. It’s evident that they tried to mask the flavor by adding cinnamon, but it’s still just gross. I had been experimenting different ways to get it down the hatch and I’ve officially found my favorite method.

I add one dropper-full to a shot of Madagascar Vanilla kefir. The vanilla flavor masks the salt water taste, and the cinnamon is a good compliment for the vanilla kefir. I can actually say I ENJOY taking Mineral Essence this way.  Try adding it to your next order!

Sore Muscles?

Post Workout Relief

Deep Relief

Do you need some relief for sore muscles after a workout?

Peppermint, Wintergreen, Copaiba, Helichrysum, Dorado Azul, and other essential oils each play an integral role in this blend. The Deep Relief Roll-On has an invigorating and energizing scent, and offers a convenient method of application for forehead, temples, and neck anytime, anywhere it’s needed.

“I use Deep Relief on cramping muscles post workout.  Normally when I get a cramp, that set of muscles will be sore for days. Last night however, I had a cramp in my tricep, and after applying liberally, the cramping stopped.”

What are some other products I recommend for post workout recovery?

Ortho Sport Ortho Sport massage oil and Ningxia Nitro. The last one is my husband’s personal favorite. I also keep Nitro in my doula bag to keep me energized during a long birth. It tastes good and it keeps my appetite at bay.

Blemishes And Non Cystic Acne: My Journey

Why don’t you just wash your face?

Most people think that people with acne just have dirty skin. That’s more than likely not the case. In fact, most people that I know who suffer from blemishes over wash their face because we are still trying to clear it from the outside in. Remember, it’s an internal process. I’ve tried every cleansing program available in the drug store and none of them worked. In fact, most of them led to over-drying my skin. I started out with dry skin naturally, but these products made it worse. This is the number one mistake of people who have this problem! We dry out the skin which leads to the skin needing to produce more sebum, (oil) to balance the dry factor. Over production of sebum can lead to more blemishes.

Generally there are three causes for acne; bacteria on the skin, food intolerances and hormone imbalance. Bacteria can play a part in some acne which is why it’s important to cleanse the skin, but not with harsh cleansers. I’ve found that the bar soaps with MINIMAL ingredients, like 5 or less, usually work just as well as the over priced stuff. There’s a bar called Grandma’s acne bar that is gentle. I also have found soaps at my local health food store. If they have ingredients like coconut oil, Shea butter, jojoba oil, avocado oil, and essential oils you have found a winner! I personally like the bars from Young Living.3675 3678
The other product that I have found extrememly hydrating for the skin is the lavender lotion. As I said before, I have very dry skin and this stuff is hydrating enough for daily wear without feeling like you have butter on your face.5201 It has at least 5 essential oils in it, along with other high quality ingredients including Aloe Vera, kelp, wolfberry, vitamin E, p-Anisic Acid, and Hydrolyzed Silk. Trust me, you can feel the silk in there!

Lavender, Sandalwood, Myrrh, Lemon & Rosemary

The Berkey Water Filtration System

Water is one of the other foundational elements of good nutrition. Drinking dirty water can have catastrophic effects on your health and can even lead to death in some countries. We are fortunate in the USA to have generally clean tap water, but if you stop to read the official report that your water company is required to send you once per year, you will see what’s lurking beneath the surface. Chlorine, arsenic and other chemicals can all be found in “acceptable” amounts in your drinking water. This is why they send out that report to you every year- to prove that the level of arsenic is minimal.  The Berkey water system filters out all of those chemicals while leaving behind all of the minerals using a charcoal filter.

For those that are following along, this is the second post in a 3 part series.

My Journey: Part 1            My Journey: Part 2                  My Journey: Part 3

In part one, I covered food, and how it is the essential building blocks to healing facial blemishes from the inside out. If you haven’t read it, and are trying to gain clear skin, please start there! In this post I will cover some of the things that I tried in the beginning of my journey. Everything from switching my make-up to finding a water filtration system; all in the hopes of clear skin. In part three, I talk about hormones and the products I use to gain clear skin.
