As a practicing doula, I enjoy reading fiction novels about Midwives. The first two books in the series had a handful of eventful births that Martha Cade attended as the town’s midwife. For me, that was my motivation in reading the novels. In the the third book however, there was a lack of births. She attended them, but the writer did not go into detail and the reader just knew that she had been at a birth. This was very disappointing and also made the story line go very slowly. This book centers on Martha’s personal dilemma and events surrounding her children and horse. I would have enjoyed the book more if there were a few more eventful births added to the plot.
